Why I read

I read because of things I don’t have:

Severe physical and mental difficulties

Dyslexia

ADHD

A cruel or abusive spouse

A full-time job

A war-torn country

Or an unsafe neighborhood

And because of things I do:

Time

Attention

Economic means

Interest

Ability

Access to a library

Education.

I read because I couldn’t watch TV in the middle of the day while my toddlers were playing, but I could listen to a book.

I read because focusing on my exhaustion at 2 am with a newborn was harder without a book in hand.

I read because the children would stop wiggling for a moment, and I could catch my breath if I read The Little Engine That Could, Knufflebunny or Pete the Cat.

I read because I was bored and books were there, but also because they made a difference with the exhaustion, the boredom, the tediousness of life; I began to see that there was more than this day and that I was capable of meeting it.

I read because of who I became and what I gave up.

I read because of who I want to become and what I want to give up.

I read to understand my neighbors, my children, my students, myself, and my life.

I read because making dinner and doing dishes are deplorable acts and I must have distraction.

I read because my speaker is not working and I don’t know my password and the 50 thousand possible choices for watching a show tonight is too much.

I read because the kids already watched TV and if I turn it on again, I will have to explain that it’s mommy’s turn to watch her big girl show and then keep them out of the room while they keep coming down for water and just one more question.

I read because it always seems to be too hot or too cold or too something.

I read to understand what was and what is, and what should never be.

I read because I’ve only been out of the country once, but there is pressure to align with this country or that, and I don’t understand the boundaries or the stakes, but I know it’s important.

I read because I simply can not play another round of Unstable Unicorns.

I read because I’m a reader and a writer and I feel the urge to support others.

I read because it feels as natural as breathing or taking a walk.

I read because I must.
